Tayaka was a rare species of canine known as the coastal or sea wolf. On 24 March, Takaya was shot and killed, nearly 30 miles from where he was released. In the weeks before his death he had been spotted with increasing frequency, raising fears an encounter might prove fatal. On his final day he came too close to a hunter’s dogs. In the end, it was his curiosity, built up from years of protection offered by the islands, that was his undoing. The original painting of this piece, went to photographer Cher Alexander, who made it her life mission to document Takaya's unique life. It will be on display in an up-and-coming exhibition that will travel across Canada to educate people on the plight of wolves in British Columbia.
